How to pronounce Aline-Mwezi Niyonsenga

For those Anglophones who go into shock at the sight of a long, foreign name, have no fear. My name can be broken up into 3 parts.

  • Aline is pronounced “Ah-leen” in a French way. Consult your local Francophile.

  • Mwezi is pronounced “Moo-eh-zee”. Practice it several times while repeating the mantra, ‘It’s only 3 syllables’.

  • Niyonsenga is pronounced “Knee-yon-sen-gah”, or if you know Japanese, “2, 4, 1000, が”. You’ll probably get it right on your first try.

For advanced name pronouncers

The ‘mw’ sound in Mwezi actually has a different way of pronouncing it. To learn how to pronounce it, watch this video on how to speak Kinyarwanda Fluently (Lesson #9 Pronunciation of M and its compounds) on YouTube.
